Bronwyn noted that Fay has been a member of the ASV since the 1950s, and is also a member of the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors. Fay studied sculpture and pottery at RMIT 1944-1947, and was awarded a 3-year sculpture scholarship. Her teachers included George Allan, Stan Hammond MBE, Victor Greenhalgh, Ann Montgomery, John Rowell OA and Klytie Pate. She returned to studies in 1968-1971 (diploma in ceramics and metal work), 1975 (sculpture), 1977-1978 (jewellery) and 1991-1992 (Netsuke carving and illuminated manuscripts).
Fay has travelled extensively, and not missed opportunities to visit galleries, museums and sculpture parks overseas. Her enviable itineraries have included many countries in Europe, USA, USSR (as it was known at the time), and SE Asia.
Fay’s participation in exhibitions has included the National Gallery of Victoria, Russell Davis Gallery Armadale NSW, the Victorian Public Libraries, Beaumaris Art Group, Rotary Sorrento, Victorian College of Horticulture Burnley, Daimaru Melbourne, Studio Gallerie Brighton, Doncaster Templestowe Gallery, Manningham Art Space, Whitehall Gallery Dromana, Loreto Mandeville Hall, Toorak Village, and of course many ASV exhibitions.
In 1998 she had the misfortune of an accident at home – a fall from a stool resulted in breaks to her right wrist, right elbow, and right leg. Removal of 3 cm from her right leg, and 7 years of rehabilitation, followed. Some would have abandoned their art. Not Fay. During rehabilitation, she embarked on a whole new media: media bark reliefs, and the totem pole works, where it is not necessary to press too hard when she carves.
Fay tries never to miss the ASV speakers each month. A loyal and unbowed Society member.
