Stadel Collection

The National Gallery of Victoria is fortunate to feature a remarkable collection called “European Masters” from the Städel Museum, Frankfurt, Germany, whilst that Museum is closed for reconstruction. The Museum was founded in 1816 by Frankfurt financier Friedrich Städel, and is one of the finest collections in Europe. It includes 2,800 paintings, 600 sculptures, and over 100,000 prints and drawings documenting the development of European art and sculpture. The NGV exhibition shows highlights from 19th and 20th century art embracing Neo- Classical, Realist, Impressionist, and Symbolist works. The exhibition will make the Städel’s collection better known, and offer a high-quality survey of the most important movements in art from
the Romantic Age to Expressionism, with a special focus on German and French schools.
