OCTOBER MEETING

"People learn nothing when they're asleep
and very little when they're bored..."
- John Cleese

and I maintain they learn even less if they aren't even there..... the eight people who were at the Community Arts room on Wednesday evening had a lot of fun looking at the bits and pieces people brought in:

JOHN BISHOP brought in some Paulownia wood that he had carved, and a range of hand carving tools – not his beautiful carving axe but a range of knives and chisels some on a multi-tool arrangement

GILLIAN GOVAN showed us her Dremel and the Duratec from Jaycar she had just bought and the fantastic range of attachments including a flexible drive... there were many oohs and ah's... and a couple of “let's buy that and can we get a discount if we buy several at once?” There was talk of people's favourite attachment and some interesting uses – such as using the Dremel as a lathe. In fact Gillian is going to buy for a few people you can contact her on 0412122884 or email gmps.govan@bigpond.com. There was discussion of using gel gloves when using power tools – some of the more moderate hands use gel bicycle gloves as they fit better.

AVIS GARDNER showed us a perspex roller that she uses to create even thickness pieces in her clay work, and also a small plaster block – again for manipulating clay – she gave us a fascinating insight into the making of her beautiful and intricate sculptures.

JENNY RICKARDS brought in a cabinet scraper that looks like French curves – very handy for getting a good surface on carved wood. Also the literature for a room air filtration unit – a great piece of OH&S equipment that sets up an air circulation pattern in the studio and filters out harmful dust before it settles out – to rise and offend next time you walk into the studio. The university study on room air filtration unit is on the Internet at
http://www.jet-tools.com.au/Media/Tool%20Test%20Air%20Filters_FWW.pdf

MICHAEL MESZAROS brought in a new copper fabricated work and talked about the tips and tricks of making it, and he talked about a couple of new works and the means of placing them on site – including getting bluestone from China rather than Australia

We all learned something – and took away some great camaraderie.

And the day after the meeting - Gillian did a carving course with Jenny Whiteside. “Excellent. I carved soapstone and Marija and another friend did limestone. A very worthwhile day when we learnt a lot, talked a lot and had something to show for it at the end.”

GRAND RE-OPENING OF BRUNO’S ART GALLERY

Well, it's been a busy time, but it's certainly all been for a good cause and I'm delighted to finally announce that the Grand Re-opening date for the Gallery will be Sunday November 6th.Looking back this is something of a miracle!
Having had no insurance for the gallery, due to circumstances, there has been a lot of unexpected magic along the way in the form of the hands and hearts of so many amazing people who have given so much along this transformational journey . . .
We are touched and can't thank people enough for their generosity of time, energy, help and support along the way.
I've considered myself more 'Bruno The Builder' for the last two years! I'm extremely happy with how the gallery building is looking and it will be great to finally open the doors to the world.
It's fantastic and rewarding to stand back now and see the gallery and house both almost complete!
Bruno

OF INTEREST TO SCULPTORS
I was hoping you could put some marble carvers in touch with me. I have about 3 tons of Chillagoe black and white marble. All pieces are quite large, with flat bases on them. I am looking for someone to take the marble from Hampton. Could you please advise if you would have anyone interested? Thank you. Sculpere October 2011

President's Message October 2011

Geoff Williams President
Would all members please note in their diaries that Gillian Govan has kindly offered her abode for this year’s ASV Christmas party – BYO midday Saturday 19 November. Further details by email. In particular this is planned to provide an opportunity for us to see more of those in the bayside area.

For the information of all seeking fame, we are selecting sculptors as our Featured Sculptor in the newsletter with particular attention to the originality and innovation displayed in their work. Whilst your work may be charming, humorous, striking, well-finished etc, we are looking for those who go where no one has gone before in conveying their concept and message. Please bear in mind that we have a lengthening list of names to consider and do not feel offended if we have not yet caught up with you. Nominations may be sent direct to the Editors, Katherine & Zoe Harrington, email below. High resolution images of a variety of work will need to be provided for works to be included.

Monica has pointed out a particularly interesting web site showing works by Jaison deCaires Taylor in the Gulf of Mexico: http://www.underwatersculpture.com/index.asp.
Maybe some would find it stimulating as to local possibilities: creation of works in partnership with nature.

The year is drawing to a close and members are asked to plan to submit works for Herring Island and Melbourne Flower and Gardens Exhibitions next year.

This has been a very active year and we look forward to chat with you at Gillian’s on 19 November if you can make it.

Tesselaar

The Tesselaar Sculpture Prize is an engaging part of the famous Tesselaar Tulip Festival held over September and October each year in the Dandenong Ranges.
The recipient of this year’s $10,000 Acquisitive Award is Luke Rogers, a young emerging artist in Geelong. Noel Muscat, a sculptor based in Daylesford, has been awarded the $1,000 Second Prize. The competition was judged by acclaimed Australian sculptor, Jock Clutterbuck.
Rachael Pearce, marketing co-ordinator at Tesselaar, said, “As part of its continuing program of developing the Tulip Festival we have been thrilled with the public’s response to the exhibition of outdoor sculpture over the past three years. The tulips in full bloom provide a beautiful and colourful backdrop to the array of creative works on display. We are very pleased to have a very high-quality field of sculptors competing for the fourth annual prize.”
Mark Cowie, exhibition curator, said, “This is a wonderful opportunity for visitors to the Festival to view in a unique setting a range of sculptural styles and mediums, which have been created by some of Australia’s finest sculptors and emerging artists.”
The finalists for this year’s Tesselaar Sculpture Prize include several prominent Australian and internationally-regarded sculptors. These sculptors have been winners of major sculpture prizes in Australia and overseas. A number of this year’s finalists have also exhibited in some of Australia’s most prestigious art competitions.
Organised by Tesselaar, with support from the Association of Sculptors of Victoria, the 28 Tesselaar Sculpture Prize finalists include: Anton Hasell, Geoffrey Ricardo, Liz Walker, Ben Fasham, Grant Finck, Rudi Jass and Frank McFarlane.
The sculptures by the 28 finalists can be viewed during the course of the Tulip Festival, which is open between 10:00am and 5:00pm every day from 15 September to 12 October.

Interview with Sculptor, Damian Vick

‘Eroded orb’ 3mm Corten Steel 900mm diameter. Wheelers Hill. Photograph by Damian Vick
K&Z: You originated in graphic design. What kind of work did you do? Do you feel that your experience in that area has influenced your work?
Damian: I spent most of my time as a graphic designer running a publication in the health sector. While I was able to be creative in this role, with complete creative control, the endeavour was never entirely fulfilling for me. Studying and working in Graphic design allowed me to gain and refine my understanding and appreciation of design principles and concepts, which I have been able to apply to my sculpture in a general sense, but I always felt limited working in two dimensions. I feel that I have responded to this by trying to focus heavily on form.
K&Z: Your work is reminiscent of artists from the 20th century Minimalist movement such as Sol LeWitt. Are you inspired by them? What is it that makes you create work in this manner?
Damian: To be honest, despite the fact that I studied art history through university it is only recently that I have really begun to really educate myself on 20th Century sculptors, and I feel that I am a long way from understanding the landscape of the art world. This ignorance has actually been quite intentional. While I have always been interested in art and the creative process, when I began making sculpture I purposefully limited the amount of artwork that I engaged with, as I wanted to focus on the thoughts and visions that occurred to me without risking having my ‘voice’ too heavily influenced by anyone else.

I have always felt that I have been searching for my own understanding of truth, beauty and identity and how they are altered as perceived from different perspectives. For me, art is essentially an output, an expression of ideas, or an outcome of analysis. My ideas come to me only when I feed my mind with information or experience. I see patterns, forms and often metaphors when I expose myself to concepts that resonate deeply with my understanding of the world. My prime source of inspiration does not come from art itself, but often from science, mathematics, biology and sociology. Gathering a deeper understanding of the behaviour of matter, time, space, and life often suggests patterns and forms that I feel underlie the fabric of our existence.

I feel that my investigation into these fields has led me to the very start of my life as an artist and now that I have given a couple of years to developing my craft as well as thinking heavily about the concepts and processes that are important to me, I am only starting to open myself up to the infinite nature of the artistic universe and am more able to take on influences without drowning out my own narrative.

K&Z: Your works tend to be large, imposing pieces. Have you ever made small pieces? What response are you trying to affect with your works?
Damian:I have made a handful of smaller works but they have tended to be studies, maquettes or experiments that feed into larger works. As to the reasons I am driven to make larger works, I can’t entirely explain this. I feel that there is potential within larger pieces to interact in a dynamic way with the spaces that hold them, be it large rooms or exterior settings. They also impact the way the viewer needs to perceive them and interact with them.

Although it may seem obvious to the point of being glib, I enjoy the way that large objects demand attention as they can overpower the viewer and dominate their experience. As humans, I believe we have an underlying sense of superiority, be it over animals, the planet or each other. I like to provide situations where the viewer is imposed upon, dominated and overwhelmed by something as I feel it provides a place within ones mind to re-evaluate our own attribution of value.
K&Z: Some of your work is functional, such as the ‘screens’. They are absolutely beautiful and provide privacy for people’s houses as they are positioned across large windows, for instance. Conventionally, art does not tend to have a practical function. Do you think that this convention needs to be challenged or do you think that pieces like your screens should be viewed as ‘design’ rather than as ‘art’?
Damian: I don’t think I can speak with enough authority to define what art is or what art is not. Personally, I don’t label the screens I have built as art, not because I necessarily believe that art cannot be practical, but rather due to the nature of the process in which they have been developed. These installations are created in conjunction with a client who has the final call on its aesthetic and who often chooses the starting point for the development of the subject matter. It is these factors that make me think of these projects as sculptural problem solving or installation design. I choose to think of art in a more pure context; something that emerges as a consequence of conscious existence. I make sculptures because they occur to me, because I feel they are justified to exist outside of my mind and because I simply enjoy the act of creation.
