Herring Island Summer Arts Festival 2012 - until 1 April

Sculpture on the Stream
14th to 29th January
Gillian Govan enjoying the Festival
The Association of Sculptors exhibition again lead the Herring Island Summer Arts Festival. We hosted a suitable launch for the 2012 Festival MC’d by Gillian Govan in her first formal role as ASV president.
The guest speaker was Councillor John Chandler, Mayor of Stonnington. Herring Island is actually part of the City of Yarra – but access is via Stonnington. The island was formed when a flood mitigation channel was cut through a quarry to isolate what was once a peninsular on a bend in the river.

Blessed with fine weather, we had good visitor numbers throughout the show – in spite of the Australian Open Tennis being on at the same time. There was also a bit of editorial publicity in The Age newspaper which helped attendances significantly. The work was well received – and in fact everything deserved to go to good homes. We sold five of the forty two sculptures, one of them twice
(two from an edition of three).

The sold works were:
Sculptor: Anne Anderson; Title: Spanish Dancer; media:cold cast bronze; 1 of 3 $960.00 (sold twice)
Sculptor: Tania Bishop; Title: Femme Fatale; media:clay BRT; unique $330.00
Sculptor: Avis Gardner; Title: Balancing Act; media:porcelain, silver; unique $345.00
Sculptor: Robert Lee; Title: Minutiae; media:galvanized wire, stone; unique $375.00
Sculptor: Carmen Skrobonja; Title: BFF (Best Friends Forever); media:glazes, hand built earthenware, raku; unique $760.00

The demonstrations were popular – but we didn’t have so many sculptors in the courtyard this year – an opportunity for next year. The catalogue with brief artists’ statements was also appreciated – in the end we printed 290 with about 30 left over. Reports – with images – on the set up, launch and on the Australia Day festivities are all on the Festival news website – currently http://hisafnews.blogspot.com.au. Over the coming months the HISAF committee is likely to be acquiring a domain name. We are hoping to be even better recognised on the Internet.

Congratulations to all the exhibiting sculptors – the work is all recorded on our website – you can go to the exhibitions index http://www.sculptorsvictoria.asn.au/exhibition_index.php#catalogues and select the 2012 Herring Island Summer Exhibition on the drop down list to view the work.
Thanks to the sitters, the helpers, the demonstrators, photographers and mentors – this show didn’t happen because of the work of one person – it was a success because everyone put in. Well done and thank you....
Jenny Rickards, ASV Herring Island Coordinator 2012 (asv_hisaf@sculptorsvictoria.asn.au).
