The News from Ballarat

It is disappointing to note that the call for artists at Miners Rest involves the submission of designs prior to appointment or payment of artists. An odd omission from a sculptor.

Unicorn Lane Gallery 1st Anniversary Celebration A Blessing

Beloved in Pagan & Christian mythology alike, traditionally the Unicorn is considered a beautiful & mysterious loner; much like many artists who work in alone in studios absorbed in their practice. Spiritually the Unicorn represents freedom and willingness; very much an artist trait. The collective noun for a group of Unicorns is "a blessing." A blessing of Unicorns/Artists is what we have on offer at the Unicorn Lane Gallery group exhibition to help celebrate the gallery’s 1st birthday. Join us on Friday 27th September at 6.00pm for drinks and nibbles to celebrate ‘A Blessing’. Deputy Mayor Cr Samantha McIntosh will officially open the exhibition. The Unicorn Lane Gallery is an outdoor gallery positioned within Unicorn Lane, off Sturt Street, secured to the Commonwealth Bank wall opposite the Unicorn Hotel. Miners Rest Town Signage

Call for artists

A call for artists is now open for suitable Sculptors, Stone masons and Landscape Architects to create two town signs for the township of Miners Rest within the City of Ballarat.

The City of Ballarat and the community of Miners Rest are looking for an innovative set of entrance signs that will help define the town’s character. The community has identified the symbolism of a miner and his dog and wish to have this type of imagery incorporated into the signage in some way.
The materials are to be primarily stone and the sign should include the name of the town in a prominent position. Additional materials and artistic elements will be at the discretion of the artists.

A budget of $20,000 plus GST has been allocated for this project. ($10,000 per sign)

This budget should cover design, materials, fabrication, artistic elements, transport, footings (if required) and installation.
Requirements:
  •  Drawings or images of proposed design.
  •  Written approach to the project.
  •  CV or bio with previous experience.
  •  Up to 5 images of previous related projects.

Email submissions in one PDF file to juliecollins@ballarat.vic.gov.au

Deadline for submissions is 6th October 5.00pm
