President's Letter for November and December

Hi All,

Welcome to the November / December newsletter like all of us Jenny is busy so a combined newsletter is coming your way. Even so it contains all you need to know about coming exhibitions and events and so much more.

I have recently spent an interesting enjoyable weekend in Hobart. The main purpose was to visit MONA (Museum of New and Modern Art). What an experience!

A Tasmanian millionaire David Walsh set up the exhibition in a building set in a winery. On first impression it is a single storey building dominated by surrounding countryside but inside is a labyrinth of underground galleries on three floors built onto the cliffs of the Berriedale Peninsula. The three levels are accessed by lifts and spiral staircases and there are no windows giving a dim ominous atmosphere.
The gallery houses over 400 works including ancient artefacts and contemporary art works. The word "confronting" has been used to describe many of the works but it is important to view everything with an open mind and it is great to view the exhibition with a friend who has the same love of art and enjoys lively discussion. If you go expecting to see the kind of art that would decorate your house or even public spaces you would I think be disappointed but the work is clever, innovative, exciting and really an adventure.
I expect some of our members have already been to MONA. It has certainly been a great tourist drawcard for Hobart. There are computer-generated works, television and video art, sculpture, scientific automations, installations and yes even a few paintings. Each visitor on arrival is given a digital tour guide, which not only guides you through the works, but also you can listen to interviews with the artists and read written summaries and explanations. Also by giving an email address a pdf of your tour will be sent to you at home so you can live it all again.
It is a great experience and I recommend it. We spent four days not only at Mona but visiting other commercial galleries the graduate show at the Hobart school of Art and of course Salamanca Market.
This is a very brief summary of my visit for more go to: wikipedia.org/wiki/Museum_of_Old_and_New_Art
We would love to hear about your experiences at MONA

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Carmel Ritchie and her husband for hosting our Christmas lunch. Unfortunately there was a lot against us including bad weather and numerous open studio events. However the few who attended had a good time and enjoyed each other’s company.

Happy Christmas all

Gillian Govan President
