Celebrating 10 years of opportunity, recognition and reward through the annual Melbourne Prize

Victorian sculptors are invited to enter in one of Australia’s most valuable arts prizes as entries open today for the Melbourne Prize for Urban Sculpture 2014.

Celebrating its tenth year of supporting the arts in Victoria, the Prize provides the opportunity to recognise and reward Victoria’s abundant talent in sculpture through an innovative and inspiring prize and public exhibition of finalists.
With a total prize pool of around $120,000, there are two main categories this year. The $60,000 Melbourne Prize for Urban Sculpture 2014 plus the new $40,000 Rural & Regional Development Award 2014. There are also awards for professional development and public voting available. The Prize focuses on the urban environment and the importance of sculpture, in all its forms, to inform our civic spaces and enrich public life.

Melbourne Prize Trust Executive Director, Mr Simon Warrender, said the Melbourne Prize for Urban Sculpture 2014 will provide significant opportunities for local sculptors, especially with the addition of the new Rural & Regional Development Award 2014. The Federation Square exhibition will enable the public to experience Victoria’s creative talent first hand.

"We are excited to be celebrating our tenth anniversary by significantly adding to the prize and award offering this year and proving opportunities to Victorian sculptors. Victoria is renowned as Australia’s arts capital and the Melbourne Prize for Urban Sculpture 2014 and awards will recognise and reward excellence, creativity and talent across the state," Mr. Warrender said.

"The prize this year has been made possible by the support and generosity of our partners and patrons, all of whom understand the importance of fostering our creative resources." He added.

The Melbourne Prize for Urban Sculpture 2014 is unique as it enables entrants to submit either a completed artwork or a proposal for an artwork. This reinforces the link between the idea and the object, thus broadening the scope for creative expression.
