The ASV Annual and Awards Exhibition 2016: Opening and Prize Presentation

The opening and prize presentation for the ASV Annual and Awards Exhibition for 2016 was held on August 9th. There was music, food and wine and a great crowd.

From the President

Hi All,

A major part of organising an exhibition is the publicity. In thinking about this we decided to send out a press release and to do this we started looking at us and what and who we are.

We are an Association. A group of people who have come together with a common interest and in looking further I realised from about 130 members we have at least 14 different nationalities. How interesting is that.

Annual & Awards Exhibition

The big day is soon! The exhibitors are painting their plinths and planning their deliveries, invitations are out there and yours is here.

A huge thank you from all the members to the organisers who have behaved as if they are tireless in spite of being ordinary human beings with lives to live and art to produce themselves.

A Stone Sculpting Workshop Adventure

The village of Canada de Benatanduz

From the outset, the possibility of travelling to the mountains of Aragon in Spain to learn stone sculpting seemed as remote an idea as the place itself, but as all the variables deciding whether we four Melbourne sculptors could go fell into place, so did our determination. We must have instinctively known that connecting with Jon Sait who runs Studio Golondrina in the mountainous north east of Spain, was a lucky find, and so Tania Stavovy, Clare Collins, Anna Auditore and myself made the trip.

Sculptor profile: SIOMA WAJCHMAN

Sioma’s "Genesis"
won the Tina Wentcher Sculpture Prize in 2014
For as long as I can remember, I have been interested in art and attended painting lessons as a young boy in Poland. However, life in Poland just after the war was quite difficult. During the war my father’s family was killed leaving him as the only surviving Wajchman. The tragedies experienced by so many during the war are a key theme in many of my pieces.

Attention Professional Sculptors

A team at Macquarie University is working on the Individual Artists’ Survey 2016 under the direction of Professor David Throsby. This is the latest in the series of surveys of artists that Professor Throsby has been undertaking since 1983. The results of the previous surveys were published in reports that have been widely utilised in the arts and cultural sector as comprehensive and reliable sources of information about the circumstances of professional arts practice in Australia. If you wish to take part in the survey please contact
